Granada, the Inlets of Lake Apoyo, the Masayan Zoo and Catarina

My most recent trip to Granada, Nicaragua viewing the inlets of Lake Apoyo at the base of the Mombacho volcano, a trip to a quaint little town called Catarina (with a magnificent view of a lake and volcano) and a trip to the Masayan Zoo.

Granada and the Inlets of Lake Apoyo

Granada is such a fun city. You can walk around safely at all times of the night and the central park and its boardwalk are bustling and inviting. Just a quick stroll outside of Granada brings you to Lake Apoyo, one of the largest lakes in the world. Throughout the lake are inlets, formed by the once active volcano, Mombacho which now lies dorminant. The inlets are full of wild life (we saw lots of water fowl and a small inlet full of monkies) and host homes to both native and foreigners. We took a three hour tour of the inlets, enjoyed a nice meal at a restaraunt at the foot of the Mombacho volcano and returned lakeside to Granada.

The Masayan Zoo

I had always meant to visit the zoo in Masaya, which about 15 or 20 minutes from the capital city of Managua. Here are some photos of my zoo visit. Pablito, a baboon, was uncooperative and hid his face so I couldn't get his photo!

Catarina

My time in Catarina was short but fun. The view in this small town is amazing. There are cool winds coming off the water and Mombacho towers in the distance. Also, faraway, you can see the cathedral of Granada. While there you can take ride a horse for a quick tour of the area.
