Diaries

How can I share my diary with friends or family?

At the top of your diary when you're logged in, you'll see a "Share this Diary" link. Clicking that takes you to a page which explains the various ways of sharing the diary: you can enter your friends' email addresses and have us email them on your behalf, you can copy and paste a link or some html code to put into an email or on a web page, or you can send a message directly from your email program.

How do I get my diary to appear in the Actual Trip Diaries section of the home page?

In order for a diary to show up on the home page, it must currently have 3 or more entries, and the "Feature this diary on the Tripdiary.com home page" checkbox on the "Create Your Trip Diary" page must be checked. Diaries that meet those requirements are chosen at random to appear on the page.

How can I remove the ads at the side of my page?

Because TripDiary is a free service and we really don't want to clutter the site up with travel marketing banners and offers, we decided to use fairly unobtrusive text advertising on the side of the diary pages to help cover the costs of running the site. In the near future we may introduce an enhanced version with a monthly subscription fee which will not have the ads.

Is there a way to change the order of the entries?

Entries are automatically arranged in order of the dates that have been set for each one, either chronologically or reverse chronologically, depending on whether you've checked "Show entries in chronological order" on the Create Your Trip Diary page. There is not currently a way to re-order entries with the same date, but we may implement this feature in the future.

What is a permalink?

"Permalink" is a word coined by the blogging community to represent a "permanent link" to a specific blog entry, news item or article. Sometimes you may want to refer someone to a specific diary entry rather than the entire diary. The permalink in TripDiary is simply a link to that specific entry, to be used (or ignored) however you want.

Can I specify multiple map locations in the same diary entry?

Within a single diary, you can create a diary entry for each location you visited, with a single map location for each entry. It's currently not possible to mark multiple locations in a single diary entry, although this is something we're looking at for the future.

I can't find the link to post a new entry - where did it go?

It sounds as though you're seeing your diary from the perspective of a user who is not logged in. If the rightmost link in the menu bar at the top of the page says "Login" and not "Log off", then you're not logged in. If the menu bar still says "Login" after you've logged in, try refreshing the page with the browser's refresh button, and see if that fixes the problem.

How do I add pictures to my diary?

Once you've created your diary, you should see a link at the top that says "Post a new diary entry". Click that, and on the page that opens up, you can attach pictures, videos, voice clips and set a map location.

When I click on "Attach a picture/video/voice clip", nothing happens

Pictures, videos and voice clips are attached in a secondary browser window. It could be that your browser is stopping the attachment window from opening, thinking that it's an advertising popup. If that's the case, you'll need to allow popups on tripdiary.com in whatever popup blocking software you're using. We do not have advertising popups on TripDiary.

Can I attach other types of files to a diary entry, such as PowerPoint files?

TripDiary supports attaching individual photos in JPG or GIF file format. We don't currently have the ability for users to attach other types of files. One  work-around is to upload the file to another web space somewhere (usually your ISP will give you some amount of web space), and then insert an html link to your file from within a diary entry. Anyone viewing your diary will then be able to click the link to download (or view) the external file.

An example of an html link to do this would be:

<a href="http://www.yourwebspace.com/yourfile">View my file</a>

changing the web address to wherever you were able to upload the file.

How many photos can I add to each diary?

We're not limiting the number of photos you can add, although you should use your discretion, since the more photos you have, the longer it will take readers of your diary to download the thumbnails and view the page. You can use individual diary entries to split your photos up into logical groups, and that way it will limit how many photos are displayed on the main diary page.

I can't set my location

If you try to set your default location in your user profile, and when you click Save, it still tells you that you haven't set your location, it may just be that your web browser has cached the previous version of the page that had that text in it. Try refreshing your browser (with the refresh or reload button) and see if the message still remains.

I seem to have lost my username/password. How can I recover it?

If you go the following page, which is available from the "[lost password?]" link in the login box, you can request your password and username to be sent to you automatically: http://www.tripdiary.com/lostpassword.aspx

You will need to supply the email address you used when you first registered here.
